I haven't changed salts from Reef Crystals to Tropic Marin but I have changed a few times before. I've never experienced any detrimental effect on livestock from changing salts.

It might be worth you friend making up a fresh batch of salt water and testing it. There was a recent problem with Kent salt being dangerously low in dKH so could the Tropic Marin be dangerously low in something that could cause this reaction in the corals?

The Red Sea coral pro salt is in my opinion the best on the market currently. At 35 PPT is boasts 480 ppm of Ca. This means that the Mg etc., must also be high.
