hi kwaf, welcome to reef corals

all you can do now mate is sit and wait for your ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels to zero, looking at your tank pix, i think you may need some more flow in there mate, either p/heads or tunze nanos get the water like a washing machine:D

if you dont want a hang on skimmer, a sump tank in the cabinet could house your equipment in the future.

nice looking tank you have there, what are you planning to keep in it?

Hi and welcome,

Very nice start you have made. :)

As post above, think about improving flow in tank, the Tunze Nano range is a good choice.

As to the skimmer, well IMO you should get one, the deltec MCE300 or MCE600, would be a good choice, this hangs on the back of the tank and does not look OTT.

Keep asking those questions, lots of nice people on site, also are you in Hull?, if so take a trip and see Marine Tec, have a word with the guys there, they will help.

dont know we want a mix of things.

struggling with the names of fish corals etc. but i am learning.

when i went to get stuff to get started i went to one place in hull that is a (trade place so we do good deals) HA!

i thought they where helping me but after going to marine tech today Marine tech was very good and wanted to help. Chris gave me the info about this site. i also went maidenhead aquatics at vista garden centre thinking the garden centre would be expensive but found it to be very reasonable, infact very cheep compaired to first place that was helping me HA.

welcome to reef corals,
you've come to the right place for info, wealth of knowledge in these peeps minds
would definitely have a skimmer if not running a sump, after seeing how much crap mine pulls out of the tank,no way would run without one
also agree with what has been said about flow, can highly recommend the tunze nanostream 6025
hope you enjoy your stay :)

someone can probably explain a bit better, but a sump sits under your tank and has feeds and returns from your main tank(usually from drilled holes in the glass),this adds more water volume to your system making it a more stable enviroment, you can use allsorts of equipment in your sump e.g skimmers, bio ball towers, deep sand beds to filter the water in your tank it also keeps your tank from getting cluttered,
anyone want to expand on my description?

Kwaf. welcome to reef corals.

first of all you may find it difficult to add a sump to your tank in the normal way. (add a weir and drill the bottom to allow water to flow up over then down to the sump.) But if you need to you could add an overflow box that will do the same sort of job. as for flow you will be able to use a seio 820 or seio m1100 the later may be a little strong. Chris (marinetech) will be able to sort you out.

kwaf, i think your best bet would be a hang on the back skimmer for now, sumps can be added later m8, using an o/flow box. lets just keep it simple for now. your on a major learning curve here.

yeah,i agree with steve,IMO your best getting a good hang on skimmer,if you get some backing for your tank you won't really see it

yep sounds good to me.

starting to get confused.

so many things to think about.

what kind of skimmer do i need and do i need it now?

also now worried about space never realy left any behind tank what about on the left of the tank as u r looking at it see picture

Hi,

Well, if you can, why not empty most of the water in to a water container, this will allow you to move the tank forward.

Be careful, and only do so if you are confident. Allow 6 inch gap, should be plenty for a hang on skimmer.

You may be able to hang the skimmer on side of tank, no reason why not ?

I assume you don't have any livestock in tank, so no need for a skimmer just yet.

HTH

Aslo, a enclosed lid might cause problems, gas exchange & heat, most Marine tanks are without a lid.

unless you are using uncured rock to cycle your tank.

if you are using fully cured rock your tank may never cycle. just a thought.

When uncured live rock is placed in the aquarium anything that didn't survive the journey begins to die off and rot (sponges, critters etc etc) the die off will produce Ammonia (which is why you never put uncured rock in an established tank).

you need a skimmer and a powerhead or two for some good flow around and through the uncured rock to help the process.

you'll probably need to do some water changes for the next couple of weeks too.

Hi and welcome to RC, as said by others you dont want a hood on as it will make the tank over heat in summer and cause you problems. Plus you really need a skimmer so the hood will have to go to get that in, the skimmer takes all the protein and crud out of your water so adding to good water quality which is what you want as its the water you are keeping not the fish etc. HTH. hi,welcome to reef corals.if you dont want a hang on skimmer you will have to go for a sump one which means getting your tank drilled.i would not keep a tank without a skimmer.derek

been looking at aspect post he has a jewel and cut out lid so skimmer will fit is it a good way of it working for my tank?

also got seio m620 off my mate new, this should sort out my flow should it not?

how long should it be before i get alge growing etc?

lots of Q i know but am getting there.

SteveS
02-13-2007, 10:50 PM
hi kwaf, i think you should be looking at turning over your water at least 20 times an hour. im not familiar with the jewel range but in guessing a 175 is 175litre tank?? that means you should be turning over at least 3500l p/hour.

a seiom620 turns over 2400l p/hour so maybe still a little short?? my tanks 180l and turns over 7300l per hour with out the sump pump, which is 40 times an hour turn over without the sump pump.

i think thats right!

algae blooms should start around 2weeks with brown diatoms, hair algae to follow

Hi Just take it slow and if your not sure please ask on here and someone will give you advice, also make a list of what fish you would like and post it up and we can then help you decide what to buy. This is best done before you buy some thing that is not compatable with your system. HTH. Eric
