hi reefers :)
as iam still in the planning stages of my new set up i've decided to go with a sump still a bit of a scary thought but have a friend who knows a bit more about that than me,but iam thinking of getting a aqua-medic riff 500 just would like to know if any of you use this, and also how to set the sump up is it better to go for quite a large sump or not,so many different ways of doing it it seems dsb or not what's the best way to set one up any info would be very helpfull.
sorry for sounding a bit thick :( still trying to get my head around this sump idea

hi there , i would`nt bother with the riff 500 if i where you use the extra money on a bigger skimmer, all you really need is a nice big skimmer a big sump to put it in, a rowa reactor some cheato algae and a light to grow it with a deep sand bed if you fancy one and enough live rock in your main display to filter the water and some decent power heads to get the flow you need and that's it really cheers gary ps if you want to come and see my tank you are more than welcome as you don`t live far away cheers gary

Hi mate.
I had one of these sumps under my jewel rio 400 tank. The sump was great but had a tendancy for being a little on the noisy side with an overflow box fitted. Not sure how you intend to plumb it in though. I used the original AM sump tank to house the Riff 500 with the return pump being used outside the sump. This setup worked really well but if your thinking of making your own sump I'd go for a bigger one so maybe you could incorporate a refrugium.
I've attached a pic for ideas
