Distinguishing Characteristics
Polyps are 1cm in diameter and widely spaced on the coral's upper surface.
Calyces may protrude well above or lie even with the surface and calycal septa, and the surface between the calyces is very spiny.
Spines are coarse and sharp rather than bead-like.
The two main differences between the Aspera and Orpheensis species are the costae and the paliform lobes.
Aspera has smaller corallites, with toothed costae, while orpheensis has beaded costae.
Orpheensis has well developed paliform lobes while aspera has none.
Echinophyllia aspera is an encrusting coral and has knobby centers. They form whorls, or circular formations, along with tiers or tall bump like protrusions.
The outer perimeter of the coral, where growth takes place, is delicate.
They can be mottled in a few or several colors, including green, red, brown, pink, purple, and blue with a green oral disc.
Count on at least six inches in any direction as a "no man's land" between them and other Stony and Soft Corals.
Light/Lighting: Need not be intense, and these corals are often best placed off to the side of bright light sources, particularly metal halides.
Additionally they all do feed at night with long, near-transparent tentacles. Some aquarists do, some don't... feed theirs that is. These corals are at their best being offered some fine-particulate meaty foods on an occasional basis.
