View Full Version : Strange fish deaths
Over the last couple of weeks I have had a few deaths in my tank unable to pinpoint the cause,
First to go was my pair of scooters then the copper band and today my sweetlips and my manderin,
I have checked all perams and everything seems fine suggestions please,
I have not lost fish on this scale before infact I have not lost fish before apartfrom jumpers and and maybe the one that was battered by other fish,
Regards Rob.

Hi Rob, sorry to hear you have lost so many fish. Looking at the list, all of the fish mentioned can be difficult feeders, could it be possible they have stripped your live rock and sand bare?

Have you not just swopped tanks Rob did you put all new water in or did you use your old water along with some new water. As said what pod life have you and how long have you had the fish that have died. Also have you used any different salt/ or food or added any supplements to the tank. Twiggy
That was my first thought but I have been throwing pods in by the bucket load but as said its odd they are all picky eaters might have to put this down to starvation never the less.
and fingers crossed it stops here,
Rob.

It's strange with the sweeylips though-i would have thought that would eat anything. What condition were the fish in when they died? You should be able to tell when a mandy is starved. By any chance were their fins ragged?
The Mandy was fine infact we thought it had gone ages ago but turned up a couple of days ago looking very well infact it was displaying to it's own reflection and I must say looked really well,
The Sweetlips was feeding well took flake frozen live shrimp as did mandy the copper band I will admit only pecked at the rocks and would only take the occasional mysis never saw it eat flake:frown2:
the two scooters just vanished never to return and they were out all the time all over the rockwork and even tank sides,
Only thing they have in commom is they are all relatively new to the tank and over the last few months all my other fish seem unaffected touch wood,
Regards Rob.
Oh well it's getting worse,
I noticed my Scopas was showing signs of white spot just after I lost my Sweetlips on Saturday,
I was hoping maybe it would clear up as it did not look to bad at first it did not get any worse it seemed to be getting better eating well and swimming normaly and it even stopped flicking but tonight although the tang is no worse infact looks a little better my damsel is howing signs of white spot now and my radiant wrasse is starting to flick I have never had anything like this before been lucky so expecting the worse,
Suggestions welcome,
Advice please,
QWould you say setting up a UV would be any help at the moment? or that a case of bolting the door after the horse,
Rob.

These are all fish that are suseptible to gas saturation. If the copperband laid on its side for a while on the bottom with a pronounced respiratory rate and the others just sat on the bottom then just died in quick succession then I'd say its probably that. Introduced a new skimmer recently? or got rid of a trickle tower?
Hi Chris,
my answer is no to the new skimmer and also no to a trickle filter although I do now have a new skimmer in place just out of personal choice that is the fish deaths have now ceassed leaving only two fish alive plus my banded serpent star and a few snails and crabs the two fish that survived were a six line wrass and a radiant wrass?,
does that tell you something I can't say weather it was or was not gas saturation but did have problems with my return pump sucking air now and again so the white spot could have been just a secondary thing,
I appreciate you throwing this into the mix as it never came to mind at the time I have not yet started restocking as this problem started in march so I am going to give it until at least the end of July before I restock slowley and carefuly,
Again Chris many thanks for your imput here,
Regards Rob.
