Is there anything I can explain about these to help?
Mine runs successfully and only takes 2 mins to feed each day.
Every few days I take a 100ml sample and picture to keep an eye on numbers. As you can see really good count. This is with removing 1.5 litres per day.

I'm interested in culturing copepods and would be in for a reactor if they are suitable - Is anyone culturing copepods in these reactors as reading the website there really aimed at rotifers ??
I've read copepods are better in shallower trays with greater surface area or is this wrong?

I have tried pods in shallow containers but always found larger containers are better despite this going against everything that others say.
Last year I ran with outside cultures and it was a roaring sucess. Think at one point I had 60 litres swarming with pod life.
However this year as I planning to try to breed more difficult species I want to try to keep the cultures 'cleaner' so would like to try them in a reactor too.
Guess I didnt answer the question did I?

You might have but I'm not sure :confused5: Do you just use natural light and varying temperature or is it betterif uyou control the light and temperature at a constant??

hi thats correct a larger surface area works better i not saying it would not work its all about finding equilibrium the right amount of water for the amount of pods balacing food ect..
this might be ideal if you wish to culture copepods and rotifers together we have not tried it

hi deep containers will work yes but some thing that has large surface area, if you have a big deep tank with 50 pods your chances of having enough to feed your fish will be slim
the main key we found is LIGHT they love it as they are attracted to it the next thing is hidding places macro alage as this helps with the water quality.

natural light will work room temp is fine you dont need to add heaters as they prefer cooler temps

i'm always patient, lol. just really want to start the culture off so i can start feeding my corals better, a happy coral = improved growth & colouration = a happy me, lol... first step is get the reactor going, then a visit to coral cultivations for some frags & then to macca for more livestock,
phyto plus
03-17-2010, 10:00 PM
you could even run the unit for few weeks save your concentrated rotifer anf freeze you have enough food to last you months rotifers are the perfect coral food

someone once mentioned freezing them in a ice cube tray, is this viable? and what would i have to do?
oh, n does the unit come with an idiots guide on how to set it up, how to start the culture off etc? i'd need one,
phyto plus

I am interested in this deal, but it is quoted that 1.5 litres of rotifers per day were being cultured but how many copepods could I expect, as it is copepods i would primarily want. But still looking into the option of culturing in shallow trays, I think phyto plus was telling me this is a better option for copepods, confused.
James if you could pm the price I will make my mind uup

is it possible to drain say a litre of rotis from the reactor and replace with tank water and a bit of ro to the appropriate sg. (obvously keeping an eye on the tank's sg). could you do this?
sailin_home
04-04-2010, 08:48 PM
the idiots guide says that mixing a new batch of water is better, and avoid using tank water as it can crash the culture. i have used tank water from my new tank as the sg is still low as i'm increasing it abit at a time and there is no fish or corals in the tank yet.

so is there a "recipe" for topping up the culture say so many grammes or ounces of salt mixed with a litre of water?
sailin_home
04-04-2010, 09:17 PM
no it just says the sg needs to be around 1.12 - 1.17, mine currently got 4litres of salt water in, and as i only had 2 days left being able to keep the rotifers in the fridge i just dumped the whole bottle in, will harvest another 500ml bottle and store it when this culture kicks in, just need to replace the harvested water with the same sg levels.

I mix up 20 litres of RO at 1.017 and store it in a sealed container. It then lasts me ages.

When I used to use even a tiny bit of tank water in my old rotifer cultures all kinds of things would start to grow. this is OK if they dont munch on all your rotifers. Sometimes I would end up with loads of brine shrimp and no rotifers

Try holding the glass up in front of some natural light. You should see tiny specks of white. Almost like dust.
