I have had my clowns for quite a bit now and they started showing signs of spawning about 2 months ago and just the other night they started to spawn, nothing came of the eggs as they were gone some hours later but give them time.

Shrimp Larvea trap.
I built a larvae trap just over a week ago for catching shrimp larvae and clown fry, I put it in my main tank last thursday and I must say it works a treat first night I had hundreds of shrimp larvae in my trap I think they are peppermint shrimps as my boxers were still carrying and I have no other shrimps, I have had no time or money to order any rotifers so I tried to make some food for the larvae out of some nano cooral food, I put some in a tub with some tank water and gave it a good shake and then put it through a brine shrimp sieve, I ended up with some cloudy water and I then added a couple of drops phytoplankton then poured it in the trap, over a week later I have about 30 shrimps left and they have trebbled in size and I gave them some newly hatched brine shrimp yesterday and they seem to be eating them I thought they might of been a bit big, I will keep you upto date see if they live or die and I will try and get some photos but the are small and even with super macro I don't think I could get a good photo.

Cheers

excellent news gal! have you tried golden pearls? may be worth having a go with the smallest size? if you want i'll pm you a link.

can you provide more details of your larvae trap? sounds interesting.

ps those clowns are gorgeous, are they true percs, or something more exotic?

Thanks mate,

I haven't tried golden pearls a link would be great,

Not to sure but some people I have spoke to who have seen them said they are true perc's but wouldn't like to say for sure but they do have good colour, the larvae is a copy I made from this link http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1659326/larvae_collector/

It's quite easy to make, I found that my electric tile cutter worked the best but you will need to run it dry for acrylic, it does a nice clean cut ideal for the weld to work, for the acrylic and weld it cost me about £10 and the light was from a pound shop.

If you get stuck and not sure how to make it, if you can get hold of some acrylic or I'll get it for you and I'll make one for you, Didn't no you was near the Boro I'm through there quite a lot as I go to james cook hospital.

Cheers
Gal

My clowns have spawned 3 more times now but still no fry as yet, I managed to get the pep larvae to 3 weeks but that was it, I think it was down to food, they spawn all the time as do my boxers but there larvae don't seem to live longer than 5 days, I will have another go at the peps in 2 or 3 months time when I have more live food and another tank setup just for pep larvae will keep you all up to date on how I get on, Picture is of a 3 week old larvae

Gal

I had clown fry all over my tank the other day managed to catch most of them in larvae trap but lost them all there was too much flow in the trap will have another go in 2 weeks when clown fry will hatch again, I have had lots of pep larvae but it's a timing thing need newly hatched brine shrimp at the ready, I have tried them on frozen baby brine shrimp and frozen rotifers but they don't seem to take to them, I'm going to build a better larvae trap that doesn't have to much flow. I will keep you up to date if I get any fry or larvae to survive and will take some video of them.
I do have a small video clip of my clown fry will put on soon.

Thanks sean, black & whites are nice, would be good if you could grow them on.

the video was taken around 1am and lucky I had my larvae trap switched on but the trap killed them, it's good for larvae but not fry I'm going to build a new trap to catch both larvae and fry without it killing the fry.

I could maybe try shelled brine shrimp eggs for the pep larvae but they would be too big for clown fry, I think I will need to get some live rotifers on the go.

I'll keep you posted if I manage to get anywhere with the fry or larvae.

Could you possibly remove the rock that the eggs are on? This is how I hatch all mine and tend to get 100% hatch.

Gal

It's a big rock but I could put a small bit of slate in front of where they spawn and hope they spawn on it, do you take the rock out as soon as they have layed the eggs and do you use another tank and whats the best food for them? it would be great if I could get them to survive.

I am lucky that my clowns lay their eggs on the silicone seam or in flower pots.
I remove the eggs on day 8 although this can vary between pairs. You will know the day they are due to hatch as you will see hundreds of eyes looking at you from the nest.
Pop the nest into a small tank with an airstone under the eggs turned very high. As soon as there is pitch black they will hatch within the hour.
Clowns need rotifers as a first food and will eat around 1000 each per day so have plenty ready.

one of my tank breed peppermint shrimps, I only managed to get two to this size and they are about 8 weeks old and doing very well, I have another batch of larvae on the go but they just pop off like flys, out of about 100 or more I only have about 10 left but will have to see how they get on.

I would be very grateful for any info on how to get more larvae to survive.
