I would love to have an anenome in the new tank.I have a beautiful gold striped maroon clown that was purchased with the tank and would love to see him/her have the oppotunity to co habit with an anenome.
I know that I will need to make my power heads etc 'anenome safe'...how?
What is the best type of anenome?
Thanks
Nikki

Hi Nikki,

No need to get a nem , a clown fish will just about host in anything.

My two, currently have hosted in some large mushrooms, before that thet thought the torch coral was a good place to be (they still go back to visit it loads).

You must think carefully about a nem, as you know, they can wander about the tank, and if they get caught in a powerhead, then you do not need much imagination to know the result.

So, IMO do think about it carefully.

Hi Nikki,

Can I just add to Ian's comments.

Watch out for your other fish with a 'nem, particularly at lights out. don't have them suddenly going off and pitching the tank in to total darkness as the fish may inadvertantly wander in to the 'nem in the dark.

Better to have actinics on before the main lights go out and even better, IMO, to have mini-moolight LEDs on before the actinics go off. This way you have a nice stepped reduction in light and the fish will be able to find their beds without blundering in to the 'nem.

If it were me Nikki, I would want to wait at least 6 months. This would give me time to get the new tank set up and the confidence that all the parameters are spot on.

Anemones are very sensitive creatures, if you can provide the perfect conditions from the outset, they are less likely to wander around and land into trouble.

What kind were you thinking of getting, Maroons usually host in Entacmaea quadricolor -> Bubble tipped anemones. Allthough these are considered the easiest (in relative terms) of nems to keep, they still require pretty spot on conditions. I would also recommend not keeping them unless you have metal halides over the tank for lighting.

as already stated nems need stable water conditions, best to wait between 6 and 12 months to your water matures. bubbles are considered to be one of the easiest to keep but still require good lighting.they are very prone to wander about and if you have powerheads in the tank you will be asking for trouble, best if you can install closed loops and this will safeguard your anemone from being damaged.derek

Maroons prefer green carpet Anenomes according to an old copy of Marine world I have, they aint the easiest anenome to keep though.

Put some sponge around the intakes of the powerheads to make them anenome safe.

Best of luck whatever you decide.

Disagree with the first points Reefer, their natural host is the bubble tipped anmone. Marine world is wrong, as usual. Why would you say they are not the easiest? I can't think of any that have lesser requirements.

Great second Point, any powerhead is like a blender to an anemone. Makes a right mess if they find their way into one of those.

as already stated the host anemone for a maroon clown is a bubble tip but they will reside in quite a few different anemones in captivity.derek

Marine World eh! They also said Green Carpets were trickier to keep than bubbles etc.

Its a world of contradiction!

Carpets require alot of lighting, perhaps thats where they got confused??

I dunno, I wish publications would actually check what they are writing with some form of reference.

All clowns are gone in the head a bit!

In my old tank I had a couple of percs that hosted in a bad patch of hair algae! Wish I had taken a pic of them!

Theres no set rules I think thats what marine World do, generalise.
We all know no one system is the same as the next!
