All my water paras are spot on apart from Nitrate now,

I just cant seem to lower them ... levels are not rising though on the bright side.

I will be doing 40L water change this weekend, maybe 60L if I can time permitting.

Are there any secret tips on reducing Nitrates ??

Hi Mike,

Couple of things spring to mind:-

Have you checked the quality of RO you use (its not unknown for this to be a cause).

You have plenty of L/R is open structure, and good flow.

You DO NOT overfeed.

I have recently added a HOB fuge to my set up, cheato, calupra (sp). and some sargassum bunged in, lit 24/7 - result Nitrate down from 15-20 to less then 5.

Agree with tetley, i had nitrates at 40 for 2 years with no solution or reasons why...i bought a collection of softies which was attached to around 10/15kgs of rock and behold within 2 weeks nitrates was gone...only answer was the addition of more LR....never come back since...

Lots of things will affect Nitrate levels,

Suitable flow
Suitable amount of liv rock
Live rock in an open structure
Suitable Bioload
Suitable feding.......

you get the picture.

As mentioned above I have been struggling with Nitrates. I added more rock that had no effect. I Dose sugar, that is having a gradual effect. I have a sulphur based nitrate reactor That is having an effect. Oh and I have upped my tank husbandry to the next level! that helped aswell.

As you can see no one thing is having the desired effect of eliminating nitrate, but the combination of things is.

Bioload --- tank is stockless at the moment
Feeding --- Maybe a bit of flake every 3 days for the shrimp and hermits
Live Rock -- have circa 40KG of it now.

Dose sugar ?? tell me more - would like to try this out

Nitrate is reading 50

And because of this and new live rock (2 weeks ago added) I now have a bad outbreak of cyano

Nitrate did peak at 100 to be honest .... when stock lost.
