now that all the hair algae has nearly gone, i can finally bare to look at the tank, and have taken a few shots. they're not very good, cos they're taken with the wife's camera, which doesn't have manual focus.

spotted goby, shrimp partner is hiding at the moment, shame cos they're a lovely pair. all stock just bought from macca the other week.

was using kalkwasser to up the ph, but started causing solidification of the sand bed, so have stopped dosing for a while, whilst i do a bit of research.

Peter... one word - congratulations! :D:D:D You must be thrilled to finally have the hair under control. I'm also dosing kalk as you know and as yet haven't experienced any solidification of my sand but I'm only adding 1ltr per night. I'll be interested to see if you post re your research on that one.

Keep it up mate... well pleased for you!!

thanks barry, it was your pm that put the idea in my head. think that some of it was removing the algae, and just helped raising the ph, got it to 8.2 cleared it all in a month. have a load of articles in a folder that i printed off the net years ago and have been reading some of those this afty, quite a few saying not to use kalk to control ph. will read some more tomorrow as i'm off out for a pint and a game of darts. will test my params also tomorrow.

Are they tank bred clowns Peter.

PS Gal has a sea hare that has been cleaning his and gouldys tank it will soon need a new home. ;) That will shift the last of your problem algae for sure. I have 1 left also. The good thing is you just pass the sea hare on once its done its job as they will starve without algae unless you feed them slightly boiled lettuce.

Reports on them are good to date.

prolly are tank bred, lfs is supplied by tmc, but they might take. tbh the last of the algae is mainly caulerpa, and thick stubbly stuff, wouldn't be too long before a sea hare starved. nearly got one the other week, glad i didn't now!!!

Hmmm... I suppose we shouldn't rely on kalk to maintain ph exclusively but everything I've read so far seems to indicate that faithfull daily doses of kalk offer several benefits. Please let us all know if you see anything that suggests otherwise.

Just a wild guess here but I'm wondering if your sand solidifying is anything to do with the precipitation of phosphate which then settles on the sand bed?

I'll be watching this thread with interest.

Love the piccy on the side of the tank btw... the Mrs laughed her head off. :D:D:D

interesting theory, but think it's down to the kalk. dosing lanthanum chloride and using phos remover fluidised. thinking it's either kalk or the sand bed not moving at all when i had a covering of hair algae. param tests will show tomorrow....

Love this fish Peter, saw Eric's a couple of weeks ago and instantly liked it. Will be looking to get one but unsure if I can keep a flame, coral beauty and potters all in the same tank? Lookin forward to those pics... How much btw?

How did you get rid of your algae?

cl0wn

combination of things, mate. manual removal, including nettting all the bits of alga floating around after pulling it off the rocks, raising ph to 8.2 (calcium reactor reduced ph) dosing lanthanum chloride, reducing lighting period slightly.

As you said suggests not using Kalk to maintain Ph.
