I have FINALLY managed to get hold of some of the pale/white pulse Xenia. It is only a small piece so I am going to epoxy it to a piece of LR. What sort of flow is best for it please? Would this be an ok location? My tank has approx. 25x circulation and receives light from an Arcadia T5 luminiaire 2x T5 54W whites and 2x actinic 54W blues. What is the best position in my tank in terms of flow and lighting for this coral please? I have also heard I need to add iodine once a week for pulse Xenia, is this correct?

I have a nice piece of LR in the upper centre of my tank about 8" below the water surface that receives a mod-high amount of flow.

Hi,

The position you have in mind sounds ideal.

Don't dose anything, see how it goes.

Overdosing Iodine can cause BIG problems.

That's a gorgeous xenia. IME they like a good amount of surging flow but not a direct blasting. Other than that, they can pretty much grow anywhere. As Ian says, I wouldn't bother with adding iodine as regular water changes should replenish enough.

Not sure if its the exact species in the picture, as I lifted it from the net...but its certainly the nearest I could find. :D I'm hoping it does take over as I love it!

Hi Tom,

I have found that the Xenia Elongata I have does well in moderate indirect flow. However, there must have been a piece broken off as I have a little clump of Xenia in a very low flow spot. These pulse away like crazy as opposed to the main colonies in the flow which only pulse when the pumps are off at feeding time.

You might regret that, sometimes its rampent. :D

I have several pieces in my tank all fragged from the same original colony, the piece doing the best is out of the flow abd half way up my 18" tank, this is really tall abd pulses all day, whereas the ones in flow are much shorter and don't pulse. I use T5's too.

Campbell I definnetely agree! Used to keep and frag this soft coral as the book suggested - in a indirect moderate flow. It never seemed to be happy. Then Steve C of coral cultivations told me to put the colony in a low flow area of the tank. What a difference. Pulsing like mad and very happy.

Well, my pulse is in a mod flow and is growing by the day. It hasn't spread much, but its branching and becoming longer. :D I've positioned some LR rubble around it in the hope of getting som frags, which in time will be passed on to other reefers. :D

Macca, I agree about the slow flow, I often turn my pumps off when target feeding and it pulses like mad. That said, I think its happy in the mod flow but you can't see the pulsing.

hi i have lots of xenia both types the one you have is the pom pom type i think from your pics. all pulse xenia are light lovers i have them direct under my halide if you put them in a lot of flow you will not see them pulse in the wilde they live in crevices with no flow which is why they pulse to move the water around .. i hope this was usefull to you hope to talk again
