They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

As a history teacher I am often frightened by how kids have little or no empathy for the dead of the Great War - that is why every year we take them to Ypres to visit the graves there. Most leave in tears, and each year when I hear the last post played at the Menin Gate I find it as equally moving as the year before. But we should just not remember our own dead, but the dead of both sides - the German graveyards are very grey and sombre, the Belgians and French understandably, would not give them land, so what you see are mass graves of 20,000 or 30,000 men at a time - most 15,16 year old boys robbed of their futures. Langmarck outside Newfoundland Park is well worth a visit as is the pool of peace, and the Ulster Tower.
One of the many things that we stress here in Northern Ireland, is that the dead involved not only hundreds of thousands of Ulstermen but hundreds of thousands of Irishmen too, both Catholic and Protestant, loyalist and nationalist - many of the cross community workshops that we hold to emphasis this are hopefully contributing to the ongoing peace process here- and it is very moving to think that the sacrifice of all those millions eighty odd years ago is still helping to build peace here today.

WW1 could have been prevented if the spineless British Government had not let the Germans March into Frances Sudetenland as they were taking the pi$$ to see if anyone would say anything. Nev Chamberlain is to blame !
