Hi,

As you may know, I am planning an up grade.

I have priced up the following:-

1:- 48x24x24 with cabinet and sump.

2:- Second hand Perc 120 (Bow)

Want I need to know is:- how much of an issue is access to pumps on perc 120 & noise. Reason for asking is, I have been reading various threads on another BB which suggest Perc 120 is noisy & access to pumps is a issue.

Any body got advice?

Didnt think my old perc 120 was noisey but the pumps were a nightmare as was the skimmers performance. If I was setting one up again I would deffinetely get a water top up and think about some kind of prefilter so the sponges in the pumps didnt need to be constantly cleaned. I know some folk removed the sponges altogether. I personally would always recommend a tank with its own sump but this is my opinion only through experience of both setups.

Forget the upgrade and buy more critters then, :-D

PS If you are thinking about a perc then they are a nice piece of furniture. Please ask other members on other forums also as it is very hard to change your setup was it is underway. Just keep thinking that you will regret not having a sump.

James,

You can rest assured, once I am ready for critters, I will be knocking on your door.

Think I am am 70% down the tank with a sump route - but will have a look at Perc 120 just in case (plan to see one on Friday).

If not for me - then all systems go to order 4x2x2 with sump (have a skimmer that will handle this (MCE600), just need to think about lighting.

MY HEAD HURTS - LOL

Took me ages to decide what to do, still not done it yet, I decide on a tank then think i need another bigger one then I see one with a sump I want, well I will stick to my decision and save up for the sump system, I think !!!! :?

Why not go for a second hand tank with sump?

I personally would never run a tank without a sump as the benefits having one are so much better than a sumpless tank.

More water volume, able to hide kit and get a better skimmer, transport any surface organics to the sump, able to fit i a small refugum are some of the benefits.

Go fo it!

I have to agree with FJ. When I set up by current tank setup I went without a sump and now regret it big time.

I am constantly manually skimming stuff off the surface and really want to be able to hide the hardware and then noise of the hang-on skimmer :(

I am now looking at a bigger tank with a sump to hold the hardware and introduce a refugium.

Noisy aquariums run better. All that sloshing about and hummm means the water is getting properly processed. There is I believe a problem with accessing the pumps, but you can get to them if you are a contortionist. If your night job is going on stage and getting inside bird cages you'll be fine.
