Just found that my algae scraper has been scratching my tank glass... I am gutted! :( Didn't appear at first, but the damaged areas have oxidised and the scratches are now white so they really show up. Gonna need to replace my tank in the near future, so what i want to know is... are there different types of glass? I have a Peak Aquatics cheapo tank, would a more expensive tank give me harder less scratchable glass? or is glass just glass?

As ar as I know glass is glass. You can get different types of construction such as laminatd etc, But I dont think any are more scratch resistant.

What sort of scraper is it? Maybe time for a new one?

I have heard of people constructing tanks from a glass called starfire, its a stronger clearer glass which has a very very slight blue tinge to it, almost crystal, just the viewable surfaces are needed i.e sides and front..not sure on costs though, they use this stuff for very expensive trophies and the like

Wayne, I know starfire glass or diamonte glass is purer and hence clearer, but I wasn't sure if it were stronger or not.

Not sure mate, just hearsay really, there was word going around that it was stronger when it was used on some building project i was on but i think Optiwhite was used which is pilkingtons version of starfire and was laminated with another colour which could have been Diamante, laminated which gave it the strength, all in all i think your right about the strength after all these are just lead free colours...or clearer colours

For the cost of replacement, plate is the way to go imo

Yeah it probably is harder, but in most cases harder may also mean brittle, if you want toughend glass get some pilkington k cut to your sizes then have it sent away to be toughend. most glazing places can get this done. Never heard of it being done for tanks though, but it would be nice to know what they use in public aquariums as acrylic would scratch very easily when the nice little angels go on their school trips and want to write their names in it.
