my new tank 4x3x3 269gals has a fall of5ft into sump and it sounded like niagra falls ,wife annoyed tried durso idea quitetend it down but sounded like toilet flushing as water goes down the rim of pipe only and sucks air in which makes the noise l did not want to use filter wool l tried plastic chainlink fencing 2 lenghs downeach 40mm pipe voila! peace and very quite wife also very happy thinking of patenting idea :) alan

Not sure how reef safe chainlink fencing is Alan. How about replacing it with a couple of lengths of airline?
wouldn't want such a large tank to be put at risk.
Oh, can we have some photos of your tank please it sounds great.

So what is this doing, backflowing the down pipes? if so wouldnt it overflow if say a snail got in there too? i know mine did :(

Basically stopping so much air getting down there. I would have thought that if a snail got down any overflow it would block it.

i put a tap on my drain just close it as fraction and that works for me
