anyone else interested in unusual shrimp? I put together this list of species that seem intriguing, anyone ever kept any of them? I think some are quite specific about what they eat so might not be suitable for home aquariums.

maybe macca can acquire some of them for us ;)

xenia shrimp (hippolyte commensalis) A commensal xenia shrimp! Not quite sure what it eats but have read reports that it doesn't eat the xenia itself.

Various small (1") shrimp from genus Periclimenes, they host in various corals/critters, not sure how happy they would be without a host. have tried to include host/food info. there are lots of other types that host in feather stars, sea stars etc. but I didn't include any of those right now.

Periclimenes longicarpus. Host: bubble coral!. Food: no idea.

Periclimenes imperator. hosts in sea slugs, cucumbers, and snails depending on morph. Food: anything.

Periclimenes imperator (different coloration). There are lots of morphs of this shrimp each one adapted for a particular host...

Periclimenes colemani. Host: urchins. Food: tubefeet.

Periclimenes magnificus. Host: corals/anemones (don't think they are adapted to particular species). Food: not sure (but presumably scraps from what the host captures)

Vir philippinensis. Host: bubble corals. Food: scraps.

Phyllognathia ceratophthalmus. I -think- this is a tube-feet eater similar to harlequins but not sure.

super! I'll take one of each of any that come in.

did a little research and found out some facts:

holthuisi, host: anemones/stinging corals
venustus, host: anemones/stinging corals
kororensis, host: anemones/stinging corals
soror, host: seastars. does NOT eat tube-feet but rather detritus the star picks up.

tenuipes (long-arm shrimp), no host - free living

and as far I can tell they do not require a host for survival but in the wild obviously it helps them as it protects them from predators and gives them easy access to left over food/waste. interestingly some will match the colour of their markings to their host.
