This tank is 8x2x2.5 christ it was heavy,

The main reason im upgrading is because of this

for some reason i can only post 4 pics at a time!!!

a friend of mine asked me to look after her in my QT while he sorted his tank out, then i get a call he doesnt want her back, o hell i thought i cant keep her in my 4x2 QT for ever and she is to big for my main tank 6x2x2 with all my other stock. so this is what i have bought.

the hood is still in the garage until its all done. Loads to do yet core drill to outside to my sump house and all the pipe work.
Iv just started to fill it up with ro about 6" so i can give it a scrub then empty it out and start again

Ok small update, advice needed please.

Im in the throws of making my live rock rack, and would like a bit of input please. The first one i made is 12"tall 12" wide and 32" long and the lower part is 6" tall , the reason for the larger left hand side is for the queen angel, i will be drilling all the pipe work for water flow not sure if i should plumb into closed loop, and cutting more holes in the egg crate for fish to swim through, this has not been glued yet as i want to make sure every thing is ok so i dont waste any more kit.
Your input would be greatly received.
Thanks Richard

Looks good Trik,

The only thing I might think about is (unless watertight) is the pipework holding up the egg crate, if water was to to enter, it might become stagnet, and you do not want that to happen. So maybe drilling holes so water can pass easily in & out of pipe work. JMO

thanks Ian , but i did mention that ao my last thread. How big do you think the holes in the pipe should be 8mm?

MR Teee
12-26-2006, 04:47 PM
8mm sounds fine Trik.

If it were me I wouldn't be connecting the pipework up for use as a closed loop.

How would you maintain it, i.e cleaning up in the event of blockages etc.
It would be a foundation for the rockwork, an you wouldn't want to be removing it everytime you needed access to the loop.

Sounds OK, just make sure water can pass easiy, so more the merrier.

I thought about egg crate when I recently set up my 4x2x2, I ditched the idea as do not have confidence regarding aquascaping (ie how to hide it).

Your tank is going to be a stunner.

to be honest Ian nor do i , i just used to throw the rock in and hope for the best lol, but as you say trying to cover the pipe work up is going to be a PITA. :)

The rack's coming together nicely. I wouldn't worry about hiding it too much, it'll get covered in coralline and hidden by corals etc in no time. I hardly notice mine's there anymore ;)

Thanks eric, right a quick update, the last couple of days iv been running around trying to sort pipe and fittings out, what a night mare. Any way iv started and almost finished all the plumbing, but with my eagerness to do the plumbing (NOT) as im a plumber/sparky buy trade and the tank half full i forgot about painting the back, :( :o . Any ideas guys/girls?
Any way i pumped over from my main tank about 175L to the new tank which was half full of salted RO water left it mixing for 10 mins then pumped back to main tank , reason being it gives my main tank a water change and supplys the new tank with mature water, i then did the same with my QT tank 100L in and 100L back so the queen had a water change to, now all tanks have the same water prams so no need to acclimatize stock, im going to do the same tomorrow.
Iv moved over a eheim pro3 filter full of floss with some sand inbetween the floss from my main tank ,

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j302/trik_photos/01010058.jpg

i also bought a couple of reactors one with 1000ml of carbon and the other with 1000ml of rowa phos, these are only on the tank temp till i get to move all stock and sump over.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j302/trik_photos/01010056.jpg

I then moved my new (well second hand) AM5000 skimmer in temp

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j302/trik_photos/01010057.jpg

i then hung a 250w 20k single halide unit up temp, this is a copy of arcadia made by weirpro £90 bargain for temp use. The reason for this is i want to move over the live rock i have hade in another tank.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j302/trik_photos/01010066.jpg

I then moved over the live rock about 175k i have just placed it in the tank and will scape it tomorrow, along with another 30k ish, and i still have around 100k in my main tank, i think some will be for sale soon.
I was amazed how much life there was already, mushes tubeworms loads stometalla and even a chiton or 2 i think, and lots of white sponge things about the size of a pea with what looks like roots coming out of them about 1" long:confused:

right this is the last update , tomorrow is the change over day,
iv finished the plumbing , and built the stand for the sump and auto top up tank. All thats left to do is a few sockets under the tank and a few in the sump house, thats first job in the morning(just as well i dont get hang overs) All 3 tanks now have the same water prams, and iv got another 200l of salted ro water on standby. The feeds to the sump are by 2 x 1 1/2" solvent weld pipe and the returns will be feed by 2 x aquamedic
or6500 in 1" solvent weld pipe, the is also a reef clean system in place also feed by a or6500. Just a few pics to show how it went today.

this is the reef clean pump, the eheim tubing is temp, i did a wet test with it.

Its not in the garage , my garage is about 30m away. Its in a building next to the house that was used to house my 2 motor bikes, yes i will be lagging the sump and pipe work, even though there is 13000lph going through the sump i dont think it will have chance to cool down(i hope), its pretty warm in there to be fare its only that wall that isnt insulated, iv also got a oil rad in there that used to keep the bikes warm (mad or what).

right guy & girls ive moved the temp stuff of the tank and fitted my lights, the main set of lights are a system 2000 3 x 150w 20k i brought of macca (james) and the other light is that cheap 250w 20k you can sure see the dif the cheaper one being alot better, i think when iv got over the heart attack on how much the change over cost i will buy 3 more of the 250w.

iv added another 2 tunze streams that 3 in total, and i still have 2 power heads at 1200lph with filter floss cartridges on them to clear the water. Also added my tunze wave box that im still playing with, if it dont work right on this tank it will be for sale. There is one more tunze to go in and the surround to hide the lights, in total i will have around 50 x turn over when all done not to bad on a 1200L setup i think.
A few more sots of the tank sorry about the poor quality of the pics i will get round to getting a better cam. Corals are still sulking but there again they only had full lighting this evening.

About painting the back. Could you get one of those small radiator rollers down the back? It looks like there may be room in the pictures. You'll have to squeeze it under the pipes but you should get a fairly good coverage. So long as you use a low odour paint and cover the top whilst your doing it, I'm sure it'll be fine. Just a thought.

Hi Richard Thats a kind offer from Steve, nothing less expected though as he is a top guy. If you cant get a 8x2 sheet in cut it in half and then join it and it will be easier to manage. HTH. Eric

fish are all happy and feeding well, only the regal seems to have got a bad case of white spot, stress from the move i think.
This fella is so happy he wont stay still long enough for a good shot.

reguarding using eggrate, its difficult to hide and looks unsitely.i used reef bones which i stuck together outside the tank, forming some large caves for my angels then just placed live rock on top of it and around it after part filling the tank with salt water.you can then build more caves if required for your fish this looks a lot better than using eggrate.derek

thanks for that derek, i have now split well broken up the rest of the live rock i have and i am in the proces of making a structure to cover them up, the only reason i used the pipe and egg crate was to try and give the queen a good hidding place as well as my sailfin both are about 7" tall, and the angel 11/12" long, i new this wasnt going to be an easy task trying to look after a big fish in a reef system, thanks for your in put. Regards Richard
