Mantis shrimps pincers are usually tucked in beside its body, like a boxer shielding his face from a punch. If it pincers were streatched out in front of its head then I would be thinking of another species of crustacea. Need a photo, :D

like above a mantis shrimp is named so as it looks like a praying mantis. what you have sounds more like a pistol shrimp to me, if it is nocturnal anyway. plus a pistol can be snuck in on live rock, you'd be damned lucky to find you have a blood/cleaner/boxer shrimp as a hitch hiker.

did its rear quarters taper to a tail fin? or was it equally thick throughout it's length.

Pistols shrimps are open for debate on whether they are really that bad, If it is not a mantis then if everything seems fine (No missing inverts, no half eaten corals) I would personally leave him.
