Hi all,

I just read this pretty heartbreaking thread on another forum, I wonder if this link is okay Mods?

This poor guy has learned the hard way so I thought I'd drop this in as a cautionary tale and if you don't quarantine at the moment, for whatever reason, you should be seriously looking to setup something up asap.

I've actually been following Shelton's other thread on Reef Park. I really feel for the guy, he had some very expensive and gorgeous zoas in his tank.

Although it is slowly becoming apparent that even quarantine and dipping may not be enough to get rid of these spiders. Someone found a link to an article that declared if spiders were found on a coral, throwing the coral away was the best you could do - what a nightmare! I really hope they come up with something to get rid of them.

Hi Gilly,

Yeah, it is a real shame, poor guy is obviously gutted.

Still I hope that his lesson can be learned by others, I am sure Shelton isn't just posting to get sympathy, so that they never have to go through this and Shelton's pain and sacrifice will worth something.

Even though they seem to be bomb proof quarantine still means that that only the newly aquired specimen is affected and can be dealt with in isolation.

I honestly don't know how anyone reading Shelton's thread, and hundred more like it, can even consider adding livestock directly in to their tanks.

Yeh seen this too.

I always fresh water dip any softie before it goes in my tank. I also leaned the hard way after intoducing some Nudibranches that must have been on a pussey coral. They breed like hell and are very fast and hard to catch.

You'd be surprised how many times I've seen things drop off into the water. Best to use a light coloured bucket.

It may be over cautious now but better safe than sorry IMO.

I know, I always dip zoas etc in fresh water with a strong lugols solution. Its amazing what comes off them. Touch wood, not introduced any nudi's, flatworms or spiders into my tanks. But that might also be because I haven't added any zoas or softies to any of my tanks in over a year!

I'd be interested to know if any of sponsors have found these spiders in zoas and corals coming from TMC?

Yeah, that'd be interesting. I wonder if TMC just isolate each specimen as they arrive and bin the ones that are affected?

Maybe worth getting one of these wee Aqua One 126 tanks.

22 litres with 11w power compact (0.5w per litre) makes that over 2watts per gallon. Water is only 10inches deep so that should be enough for light most corals. Yes? No?

Nice and small and can sit almost anywhere, so you can isolate and closely observe new aquisitions for a few days/weeks as long as is necessary.

So really, everybody, there is no excuse not to quarantine and after reading Shelton's thread I hope there's a bunch of folks scared sh**less enough to take action.
