I might have two APF850's for sale after the New Year. I am still thinking of getting a twin AM but have not made up my mind. Would welcome back comments on the twin 5000 AM, as I love my deltecs but think I require a bigger skimmer but at the moment I am still 50/50.

Would you consider it an improvement the over 2 850's.

I know the 5000twins are good but so are the Deltecs.

I would hae thought that 2 skimmers give more flexibilty, in that one could be setup to skim wet and the other dry?

If I dont get a lot of positive reactions regarding a major difference betwen the 850s and 5000 then I will happily keep. :D

James

PS Eric there is a 702 on ebay right now.

Hi Adam emailed him when he had it on first and he said he wanted £550, then it went up again a few weeks later with buy it now for £645. I dont want to go mad as i can buy a new one at trade price which is a good price. Eric

i have just lifted this off reefcentral
Deltec AP703 vs AquaMedic 5000 Twin
i got this pm from Tony in the UK after reading some of the related comparison question threads on this forum. i have posted it with his permission. it's from a friend of his in the UK who posts on the european version of RC (Ultimate Reef). i can't vouch for the methods or validity of the study, so take it for what it's worth.
i'm not sure what some of the conclusion numbers mean specifically, so if there's someone who can shed some light on it (i.e. the 1.5% increase in solids....is that a lot???) it would be appreciated.

Have a look at this email I got from one of the guys off ultimate reef, he's done a test between a Deltec 703 Skimmer and an AquaMedic 5000 Twin.

This guy has a fairly large system and quite simply used just one skimmer at a time, then swapped from the AM to the Deltec. He repeated the test again to see if results we similar and, they were. I believe all variables (stock level, feeding, water etc) were kept as constant as is reasonably possible.

Interesting!

Hi Tony,
Just analysed the results of the two skimmers.
I have done this twice now to ensure that the skimmers were at their optimum performance.

AM 5000 Twin Test 1: 632ml
Deltec AP703 Test 1: 905ml
Am 5000 Twin Test 2: 640ml
Deltec AP703 Test 2: 907ml

I had the skimate checked at work - the Deltec AP703 skimate allowed 20% less light through than compared to the AP 5000. The results were averaged for over the two tests.

The AP703 skimate weighed just over 1.5% more than the AM 5000 - this is because there was more particulate in the Deltec skimate. The results were averaged for over the two tests.

So overall, you can see that
(1) the Deltec skimmer is some 50 better in the amount of skimate it collects
(2) There are more solids in the Deltec skimate (by some 1.5%). I think this because the amount of air the skimmer pulls in and
(3) the Deltec skimate is darker by 20%

just for the record i have just bought a deltec 702 very nice skimmer but no better than the deltec 1060 turbo that i was using cheers gary

Hi Gary.Sorry to hijack your thread James. You say you have just got a AP702 instead of your 1060 turbo and say there is not any difference between them. What size is your system as i am in the process of setting up a 400 gallon one up after Xmas and was thinking of the 702 to skim it. Eric

I have been using an AM 5000 single and I cant believe the gunk it pulls out. I used an 850 before and whilst it is all round excellent I think the AM is better.

Thanks Keith! I have read this reply in numerous occasions and hence why I am looking out for one. They must have a fair amount of contact time due to the size of the reactor Chamber. The price is a bit hefty but you never see a second hand one so that must tell you something.

I paid £460 new for the single which is about the same price as a new 850. You are right about the contact time. The bubbles stay in the tube a very long time. Dont use them where noise is an issue though. And, they wont fit under the tank lol:D

hi tangman, my tank is about 900 litres with the sump so i was over skimming with the 1060s and the 702 both are rated at 1500 litres heavy stock and 2000 normal stock, the 1060s uses 3 2001 aquabees and the 702 uses 2 eheim 1060 , i am feeding the 702 direct from the overflow so i am not using a pump to feed it so saving a eheim pump and 65 watts i must say the 702 is much easier to clean and service than the 1060s but the quality and quantity of skimmate is about the same cheers gary

edit i have just noticed you are going to use on a 400 gall system i think you need a minimum of ap 902 but i don`t think you can get it under your stand or a 1064 turbo which would go under your stand cheers gary
