I am not trying to be funny Danielle, but you really need to research any stock you put in your tank before you get it for eg. compatibility, feeding, some stock require different params, only slightly, but could make a lot of difference to others. As for the star fish, sorry I have no idea. Not that clued up yet.

Your tank isn't really suitable for a star fish:D

Hi as per what others have said, its also very hungry as starfish stay on rock work and when they climb up the glass means they are looking for food. In my opinion you need to take it back to where you got it from until you have some life in your tank to support such animals. If you dont know about things to put in your tank please ask on here that is what its for, also most shops will say yes it will be fine in your tank as its putting money in there pocket. Twiggy:D

hi glad you asked about a book,i dont know of any but you dont need a book as you've got the family (us) to take care of you, your best bet it put a list up of what you would like along with tank detail, and im sure you get loads of peps let you know what is good and what is not for your tank, just remember we were all beginners at 1 time or an other,so dont be affraid to ask.:)

Hi as Mike says you dont need a book as you have all the help you need here. Most books are old hat and out of date as marine keeping is changing so quick. As i said most shops are only after your money however good you might think they are. Twiggy:D:D

Hi,
I have a few books and would recommend two books by Ronald L.Shimek called Marine Invertebrates (covers corals and motiles) and Marine Fishes.
I also have The Nano-Reef Handbook by Chris R. Brightwell which has some good basic information in. However, this was one I read a couple of times before getting a tank so may be a little basic if you already have one.
For information I have an Orca tl450 which I have had for around 8 months now. Contents in two hermit crabs, three snails, soft corals (toadstools, zoas, mushrooms, pussey) and a hammer coral which is mynew addition.
Unfortunately I have suffered a few fatalities in my tank been a couple of small zoa frags (not sure if my lights were not sufficient for specific colours), one hermit crab (bought at the same time as the other two) and an emerald crab (great guy so was sorry to find him dead :frown:).
Hope this is useful, let me know if you need anything else from a reasonably new person.

I thought there was a possibilty it could be a molt but its been quite some time since I have seen him - any idea how long they can hide after a molt? I used to see him very regularly.

the man from the shop told me the star fish would be ok as long as there is algage growing in the tank, which there is. the only problem is the star fish is staying on the glass instead of the rocks which dosnt seem to be a good thing. im not listening to people from the shop because obviously they need to make a living so will sell the fish. i cant make it up to the fish shop until next week now to bring the star fish back so is there anything u can recommend me to do to keep the star fish healthy or is it basically a gonner by being in my tank in the first place?

Hi you can put some bits of Clam or Mussel just under the sand, or when its down place some pieces under it and see if it eats it. Twiggy:D

Frozen brine isn't a good food to feed your fish either it has little or no nutritional value. I feed frozen once a day and that consists of lobster eggs, chopped cockle, chopped squid and cyclops. I defrost 1 cube of each in tank water in a small airtight container and keep this in the fridge. It lasts me around 3-4 days. I also feed ocean nutrition flake, pellets and Kent carnivore pellets at least 3 x a day. Can you pm me the name of the shop you have been visiting please just for my own curiosity.

i feed them marine flakes which have shrimp, krill and flakes in the morning and either frozen brine shrimp with garlic or frozen mysis shrimp in the afternoon. is this not what i should be feeding them then?

hello dos anybody know what star fish this is?
with the slender legs and 6 arms it looks like a Echinaster.sp , Fromia.sp often climb the glass to get to the water surface where most of the plankton is found but the echinaster will be looking for more meaty food.

Try to cut the frozen down as much as possible or try to make your own from different fish from the seafood counter in your supermarket.
