View Full Version : Coralline - with or without?

We decided to clean off all the coralline from the back glass last week because we thought it would be nicer. Now we are not so sure. Do you think we should keep it coralline free or let it all grow back?
Here's the before and after shots (although the I almost forgot to take a before shot, hence the clean patch :-? ):

Mine covered my old tank gillybaby and i thought it looked fantastic...then i scraped a bit off....then some more...ive never let it grow back since as i like the look of a crisp tank imo, so much brighter i think :-D
My vote is lose it 8-)

I only clean the front glass and leave the back and sides for my Longspined urchin to sort out, they are never completely spotless but I can live with it

The colours of the fish seem a lot brighter with the clean background so 'keep it off' gets my vote  Fantastic tank BTW- u always take great pics, what do u use?

Hi
Without a doubt no coraline looks so much better.
I clean the sides and the back of my reef.
TBH cleaning the sides does not really matter (apart from the side by the window) but the back of the tank is a major factor into how your tank looks.
That colour you have looks very similair to mine!
Looks great by the way! :-D

IMHO it definitely looks brighter and more vibrant without the corraline on the back. Keep it off

Ok then, looks like a landslide victory for keeping it clean - I think we'll go with the majority and attempt to keep it like this
Marcoz - thanks for the comments, I use a Canon 300d DSLR for taking the pics. My b/f is very slowly showing me how to use it properly and the results are finally starting to pay off, I hope. I'll post some more pics in the photography section in a bit.

Cool, I look forward to that. I'm thinking of buying a digital SLR soon so hopefully I'll be able to take similar pics

I like it without it looks nice and clean and bright, i dont like coralline full stop as it clogs up the pores in the live rock so it cant work properly also clogs up all your pumps and powerheads as well. Eric :)

Oooo, this is getting more unanimous every day ;)
Gotta say, as we are getting more and more used to the clean look we much prefer it. I think the coralline novelty has most definitely worn off. We don't actually get much growth on the rocks and the tunze streams, just the glass. I'm hoping by preventing it from growing that more calcium etc will be available for the corals to grow, not that they are really needing much help at the moment tbh.
Thanks for everyone who voted and helped us make the right decision.

No idea. Maybe it's cause it was having an easier time growing on the glass. Will keep an eye on the rocks now and see if the growth increases.
