Hi leon, carbon can be used to remove toxic compounds produced by soft corals for the purpose of chemical warfare against rival species, and you can use it to clear up any discoloration of the tank water.[yellowing.]
You must change it about every 4-6weeks because it will unload all the adsorbed toxins back into your tank water.

Use only Reef Carbon (New Era, Rowa or Kent). If you have problem with ORP run it in your external for 24 hours only then place the bag behind the reef for a month. Change the bag behind the reef every month to maintain a good ORP. Forcing water through carbon will remove trace elements.
