Hi all a question for you does the skimate contain salt or is it left behind when skimmed thought I would ask first before I go sticking my finger in:vomit:,

this maybe wrong but I believe skimmate is just dissolved organic carbon that has been extracted from the water because it 'sticks' to the air bubbles, the salt won't be extracted as it doesn't stick to the air bubbles and is left suspended. Correct me if I'm wrong anybody

It is salty :P
Each air bubble still has a film of the water/ organic mixture on it.
Wet skimming on a small tank will reduce the salinity slowly over time, I know because it happens in mine.
Eddy did you know or did you taste it?:jawdrop:,
Started off in the eighties drinking a cup of my own urine every morning and it sort of developed from there.
No seriously, skimmate is salty, so you are constantly removing salt from your system all the time you are skimming particularly if you are skimming wet. Regular planned water changes are sufficient keep the salinity at a reasonably constant level, but if you do not keep this up you will notice a drop in salinity over a period of time due to salt removal via the skimmate.
Hope this helps
Eddy.
Thanks for the info I know I could have could have done a web search but then everyone would not have had the benefit of this thread:D lol,
no really another learning curve,
Rob
