View Full Version : ceramic tile for frags ?

I need to start fragging my very large leather coral and to keep the cost down i wondered if i could use ceramic tiles. The ones i was thinking of were the ones that come on a hesian sheet that need lots of grouting, they would be the perfect size.
Anyone tried this before ?

Hi you would be better getting some alfagrog, its a Koi filter product and is like Live Rock rubble and is ideal for doing frags on. HTH Twiggy:D:D

darn i threw a sack of that out :dummy: i tried it as rock rubble for the sump but wasn't happy with it so binned it .
Tiles are nice a flat so i thought they may be easier to use, you can buy ceramic disks for fragging so hoped normal tiles would do jusr as good :confused:

You can use ceramic tiles but you face a few problems, you need to know what there made out of, as they could leach into your tank. People dont really like putting cubes in there tank.

Marble white pebble interlocking border tiles are perfect you can find them in DIY shops, just make sure they are marble. Soak in RO overnight then dry them.

Be VERY carefull using ceramic tiles, most have toxins within the glaze and could give you some real problems if put into your tank, Im not sure about marbel?? i would guess if its a true marbel it would be ok but if its any form of a conglomerate the resins inside will again give you big problems.
Id go with Erics suggestion or buy the proper discs off flea bay.

What about small beach pebbles, once boiled?? Cheap and an inexhaustible supply,

I find bits of ocean rock ideal , It breaks up into more natrural shapes , colours up quite quickly, takes super glue well , and it's heavy so frags stay put better just my opinion :D

I think i have a bag of decorative pebbles from when i had my cichlid tank, i will have to dig them out and boil them then they should be ok
