Hi Col it looks like you have the dreaded Diatom algae, has it been with you long or has it just appeared. It will go eventually i know because i had it a few years ago and it did go. Eric
Eric
It's been going on ages now, it's persistent stuff. I'm currently addressing this after loads advice from peeps on other boards.
This upgrade has been a nitemare from start till present!!!

Silly question but are you using a different type of sand when you upgraded ?
And have you tested your source water for abnormal levels?
Mike
Yeah, the old tank had coral sand (the fine gravel stuff), this one has sugar fine.
I used all new water aswell, against most advise.
Welcome aboard:) What are your phosphate and nitrate params please and do you use R.O water and phosphate remover? This problem can be easily rectified, do not despair!
Phosphate = acceptable on Merk/D&D kit = 0.00.....
Nitrate = trace = <1
RO = 0 TDS

hi col,just outside durham at langley park.derek
Do you syphon any out with your when doing your water change Col?
For a while I was syphoning thru filter floss and returning the water. Now I'm just syphoning and replacing with fresh salt water. A salt bucket full (of water)every 3 days at the mo.
I've definitley broke the back of it now, but it's persistent stuff.
I've cut down feeding drastically
Reduced lighting by almost half
Syphoning and water changes every few days
Usually lasts about 4 weeks, as long as you keep syphoning it out with each water change and don't let it get so out of hand. Keep nitrate and phosphate down to a minimum. Reducing lighting by a couple of hours also helps as this type of algae is photosynthetic. :)
4 weeks, had it for more like 4 months.
But have you tried all the above.
aaaah, I see.
Been doing above for a week or 2.
Just keep plodding on and it will go m8, I assure you.:)

Seem to have sussed it, got rid of the bown stuff at last.
Got some proper red cyno now, but not even close to being as bad as the brown.
