Contrary to what some lfs say there is no such thing as a white anemone. If it's white then it's on it's way out and would take some serious care and attention to bring it round. It also depends which anemone it was as lfs wrongly name many malu's and especially when they are white. If i was looking for a 1st nem i would try to get a bta from a fellow reefer that had split. Far too many are taken from the wild only to perish. I've heard over 95% of wild caught anemones die within 1 year. I personally believe it's only a matter of time before most nems are illegal to take from the wild.

get fed up with seeing shops selling "white malu's", as if they are supposed to be that colour. agree with gaters, tank split bta's are the way forward. as always, they sell them because people still buy them, hopefully when noobs become educated, the demand for these creatures will drop.

ahhhhh, mys lfs sold me a malu, white with purple tips, said thats how it is, looked after it really well but lost it after 18 months, is he wrong then?????? should it not be white after all?????? The longer i keep marines and the more i learn the less the guy at my lfs seems to know - funny that!!!!
He is currently selling a mimic tang as a lemon angel - how good is that, it was obvious to us as soon as he saw it, getting quite worried now!!!!!

mimic tangs do mimic lemon peels, but should still be easy to tell the difference.
any white nem is bleached and has ejected it's zooanthellae, it is possible to help the nem get it's proper colouring with feeding and the correct lighting, but very difficult, and not for the beginner, who unfortunately, end up buying these nems

That looks like a job well done-i wonder if it has an effect on them when getting so stressed and this leads to an untimely death even though they look to have recovered. Was it a h. crispa?

yup crispa. just gradually shrunk away to nothing over the course of a few weeks. think it may have been a combination of factors, always did better under t-5's and switch over to MH didn't help, IMHO. was a lovely nem, didn't wander.

You have to remember that anemones don't age as such so in reality have an indefinite life span. In the wild they can live for 100s of years, so 18 months is not a long time. As Clown has said nems become white through stress-being taken from the reef, no light, poor water quality etc and as he has shown even though he expertly 'brought round' his nem it died later when it appeared in good health.
Just the fact that your lfs can't spot a mimic tang would raise alarm bells;)

It looks lovely in the 2nd pic. It just goes to show how fragile they are. I have a crispa at the mo'. I got it with the setup when i bought it 1.5 years ago. It was bleached but not as bad as your one and it isn't as brown now more beigey purple and it's more than doubled in size. I would put some pics up but still can't work out how to do it. Always says image is too big and i don't know how to resize it.

That's what we are here for-sharing info. If you are thinking of getting a nem-when you have 5 mins spare have a good read of www.karensroseanemones.com (http://www.karensroseanemones.com). It's very informative mainly about bubble tip nems but alot of the info is transferable to all species. Imo if it's your 1st anemone then a bubbletip will be less hard to keep (note i said less hard-all are extremely difficult) and can be bought from fellow reefers whose have split and bubbletips tend to be far more colourful.:D

if its white more than likely its bleached, more than 90% of nems usually die in the first 12 months even the wholesalers tend to lose up to a third of nems before they even sell them.if you want a nem try & buy a clone from somebody or a one that has been in somebodys tank for over 6 months.derek

Thanks, it wouldnt be my first but I will still be taking a look at that site, you can never learn too much imo. Can you suggest a good place to get a nem from as i don know anyone else who keeps marines and I am getting increasingly unhappy with my lfs? Thannks again!
