Just set up our new mantis tank using water from our 6ft reef with a small amount of new salt mix added in (mixed and aerated for the usual 24 hours or so beforehand). The parameters are listed on my website here (http://www.gillybaby.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=64&Itemid=77).

As its been over a year since we set up a new tank and we can't remember, can anyone confirm why the PH would be so low at this time? The lights have been on for about 9 hours. The tank does have a closed lid but there are slots at the back to let in air and the surface is being agitated by a spray bar. Our other nano is in the same room (about 4ft away) and the PH on that was reading 8.1 at the same time. The other parameters are pretty much equal between all three tanks.

Will the PH equalise over the next few days do you think?

Hi,

If new tank as you say, then PH reading will be all over the place until the tank has time to mature.

That's what I was hoping someone would say. I had it in the back of my mind that it takes time to stabilise but couldn't remember for sure ;)

I recall the question asked on another BB by some one - iirc it was "Kim" who posted the answer, and thats one guy who's word and knowledge I would trust.

Too many variables to assess here. How is it measured, did the nano have lights off too, what is pH in main display where the water came from? Not enough information. You are welcome to discuss this at my store. One comment I will make is that I would never cover a marine aquarium. This can cause CO2 retention and low oxygen. Either will have pronounced effect on pH stability and much, much more!

Chris, Gillybaby is from Scotland, so chances of her getting to Leeds are slim.
