TUT at my anemone, it just won't stay still  !!!! Came down this morning to find he was on his travels again last night rearranging everything on the left hand side of the tank. Blooming thing....
Any ideas on how I can get him to stay still ??? Apart from fencing him in with an electric fence

Give them perfect conditions
Seriously while corals have to stay where you put them, if an anemome is not 100% happy with its conditions it will up and move to try and find a location with perfect flow rate and lighting, and 99.9999% of the time this will be in a location that does not look good at all (I had one that really wanted to be stuck slap bang in the centre of the front glass of the tank) :-?

Anemones are trouble....
Even once settled and happy it only takes something to disturb them and they can be on the move again....
That combined with their need for imaculate water conditions and (in most cases) high intensity lighting is the reason we don't recommend them for reef tanks - they can be a timebomb.
The main reason most people want them for their tanks is for Clownfish - in which case I suggest a large Sarchophyton leather as a substitute - VERY easy to keep, will not move around and very attractive animals too - and most Clownfish species will adopt them given time.

Just a word of advice for anyone with an anemone. If you have powerheads , make sure that you have a large enough sponge over the intake of the powerhead beacause as is the nature of the animals for walking about if they are not happy - they will get sucked into a powerhead and your worst nightmares will be on you. The knock on effect of an anemone having this done to it can be catastrophic for your tank.
This is only my advice.
Regards Chris.

My I suggest a sand anemone. I have had one for over 12 months now and it has become a home to my clowns. In that time he has moved about 3inches from where he first settled.

Hi
Great advice from the guys!
Nems do require excellent water parameters and the best lighting for long term survival and i really am against people trying them in new tanks that have not stabilised.
As said by Steve nems are one of the first thing on a nebies shopping list due to their symbiotic relationship with clown fish.
A sand nem would be the best nem to stop wandering but if they are not happy they will detach and may end up floating around.
I have had my current nem for nearly 7 years which was a BTA (bubble tipped anemone) bought for £8.
Since then it has split 13 times so i have a good few in the tank and have also sold a few on.
They a great additions to an established reef and to someone that can cater for their needs.
Cheers

interesting thread guys  I introduced a bubble tip anemone recently for the reasons explained above(clown fish) at first everything seemed fine- the clown fish was especially happy :-D After a couple of weeks though the bubble tip shrinked and kept moving. I noticed my phosphate levels were a little high but it was too late to do anything about. Soon after the anemone died  With hindsight I think I may have been too eager in introducing him. I thought my tank was ready but obviously these creatures are more sensitive than most and (as stated above) your parameters must be spot on. A steep learning curve

To be brutally honest they are trouble - we never recommend them.

depending on which anemone you have lighting and water flow will determine whether it moves about or stays put.most bta will be okay under t5 lighting, but heteractis magnifica needs metal halide 250w and over.i have two heteractis magnifica anemones together sitting right under a 400w metal halide, next to them approx18ins away are two red bubble tips which seem to like the strong light.at the other side of my tank there is a large heteractis crispa anemone which is also directly under a 400w metal halide.the anemones have not moved sinced they were placed there one nearly 2yrs. derek
I would suggest that anemones are only kept in an aquarium with an absence of pump and powerhead inlets.
A Jaubert system with an air pump for circulation or even an "old style" under-gravel filter is what I would use if I were to try an anemone again.

I LOVE my anemones I have 2 a BTA and a carpet, my clowns love them also, but by the sounds of it I have been lucky, both of mine found there homes within a couple of days and have not moved since, they must be happy they have almost doubled in size!
