There seem to be many different types of media available to put in your filter and wondered what each of them do. Mine is currently filled with little stones(don't know the technical name) and understand they have a large surface enabling good bacteria to grow but what about the others? Oh, I have put phosguard in one of the levels, an attempt to keep the phosphate levels down, but am thinking of growing some seaweed in my sump which I believe is another topic altogether!

Hi,

If you have live rock & plenty of good flow around rock, you should have no need for any media in your filter.

In fact leaving the media in could result in a build up of nitrate.

I run a external filter, all media removed, I use this for running my carbon & phosphate & also it adds a litle more flow to the tank

Exactly the same here.

An external filter with Polyfilter and nophos in it, nothing else.

Also, do yourself a favour and change the ribbed hose (if indeed it has ribbed hose) for smooth hose, I use eheim. Bits of food etc can get snagged in the ribbed hose and build up and build up until you have a proper Nitrate factory.

I have an eheim too but with smooth tubes  So you recommend I remove the media altogether, what do I put in there instead? I have a good amount of live rock in the main tank.

I've got live rock, good water flow, coral and filter media called "GlaFoam" which are small rocks which work brilliantly! I think its just a case of trial and error.
