Hi
I wonder if some one can help me?
I have bubble algae growing all over my rocks, i have recently added a couple of emerald crabs to hopefully get rid of this.
i have whatched them carefully but at present they seem to be more interested in the hair algae.
I purchased small ones so can i assume that as they get bigger they will tackle the bubble algae?
I have also seen the red ridge crab here on reefcritters which also eat bubble algae is it possible to keep them with the emeralds?
I am physically removing as much as i can by hand but its very difficult to get in the crevices.

I have a 4ft x 18 x 12 tank with about 40kilo of live rock and a 3ft sump.
(finished its cycle about 3-4 months ago)
Any help would be very much appreciated

Hi Clem. Bubble algae is a menace i know but it does not cause any problems as some people actually like it in there tanks. Mythrax crabs are noted as been able to get rid of this but have not had any success with them, i bought a Foxface and he did eat a few but as i have a large tank i had loads of them and i think he was overcome with them, but eventually i stocked the tank with Tangs and my sailfin and lipstick ate the lot of them. IMO they will go in time on there own as long as you dont burst them as this spreads the spores so spreading them further.

You may want to try a foxface if so make sure you get one that will stay smallish as some grow to 15/18 inch in length. The one spot one Siganus Unimaculatus grows to about 7 inch and is ok in a reef tank, and is a hardy fish but be careful i you do get one as they are Venomous and can sting you with there spines. They will not attack you or your fish as they tend to shy away but can look after themselve if threatened. I have a Masked one Siganus Puellis and he is about 10 inch long at present but can reach 15 inch. HTH. Eric

The bubble algae in my system went away, have patience in your crabs they will run out of hair algae to eat one day!
