Agree with Ian, Deltec make great skimmers and their customer service is second to none. They may be pricey but are well worth it imo.

Yes Deltec! :)
I have 2 Deltecs and 1 Aquamedic and i find the skimmate of the Deltecs much darker than the aquamedics.
I also feel that Deltecs could be a little bit cheaper but they really are a class skimmer.

I still use my old SeaClone skimmer.
Once I did the mod to the central tube the 'gunge' production doubled 8-)

I also like the Deltec band they a little on the expensive side but I think worth it in the long run. But having said that there are some very good budget ones about t.m.c's v2's for one.

we sell v2 skimmers at our shop and use them too think they are very very good just because they are cheaper then some others on the market dont make them less of a product.
i used to sell aquamedic turbo 1000 multi sl and i put a v2 skimmer on test with each other the v2 out skimmed the aquamedic and the aquamedic is twice the price, when t.mc. told me abouth these cheap skimmers and i saw them i thought what a load of crap until i tried them. :) very good for the money :-D

We have heard a lot of good reports about the V2 skimmers too - and they are much more affordable than the Deltec skimmers.
I must admit Deltec skimmers are superb, but i do think they are overpriced - and although Deltec have great customer service, as anyone in the trade will tell you they don't make life easy for us the retailers.
Since improving their needle wheel the Aquamedic skimmers are far better - its only a matter of time until they catch up with Deltec....
Overall, if you want a very efficient, economical skimmer I would suggest you give the lads at Reef Shop a ring and order a V2 skimmer.

Ive got the following and this is a quick pros and cons guide solely based on my personal experiences with them
Deltec MC500
pros:-efficient, reliable skimmer, quiet (after fitting the new dampening kit)
cons:- takes up room in the tank if not used in a sump, collection cup is a pain to clean, can release bubbles back into the tank despite the degassing sponge which will also need cleaning regularly, has no overflow prevention
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deltec MCE600
pros:- as above really except it has the added bonus that it can be used in a sump or as a hang on and it is suitable for slightly larger tanks than the MC500 and has an overflow pipe from the collection cup so if the cup fills up it shouldn`t overflow all over the floor
cons:- again, the collection cup isn`t really designed for easy cleaning, can release bubbles into the tank despite the degassing plate and a lot of people have to modify them by removing the plate and adding an elbow and/or piping which imo is a pain considering it costs the best part of £200 !
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tunze Doc Skimmer
pros:- Tunze efficiency, quiet, large collection cup that is easy to clean
cons:- takes up tank space unless used in a sump, has no overflow prevention
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aquamedic Multiflotor 1000 Turbo SL
pros:- quiet, efficient, large collection cup that is easy to clean, large Ocean runner pump generates a lot of bubbles rated for tanks up to 1000ltrs or smaller
cons:- best suited for sump use, the return flow boxes can sometimes need tweaking to prevent bubbles returning into the tank, has no overflow prevention so (in theory) if left unchecked and if used as a hang on in the sump it could flood the cabinet, might be advisable to turn it down to the minimum if going on holiday unless someone is going to check on it for you

We have a TMC v2 800 skimmer with a silencer.....
This IS the noisiest skimmer I have heard :( . So if you are planning on putting in a living room beware!) I have had no response from TMC with regard to the noise - sounds like an old kettle boiling - so imo I dont rate them. Wished I had spent the extra on a deltec.
Have tried to fix a bit of airline to inlet to dampen noise but makes no difference.
LFS are now trying to contact TMC to see if they can get any response on my behalf.
Good luck with what ever you end up with!

Got a V2 400 tonight, it skims like a dream, more in 3 hours than in 2 weeks from the old prizm (I was given it to start me off so I m not going to complain too much) But it does chug away though, will it make less noise if its put in the tank instead of hanging on??

I used to have a Priszm on my smaller reef and these got a bad reputation from some reefers, but have to say mine did me proud infact have 2 in fish house waiting to be added to my frag tanks.
On my 5*2*2 i have a Berlin skimmer which did well for the first 3 months then stopped produced muck.
I added a air pump to the skimmer and it does me proud :-D
Cant complain almosty 3 times to gunk i had when i first set it up.
If i ever needed a new skimmer however i would go the deltec route to see what all the hipe is about 8)

In my opinion there are only 4 skimmers currently on the market that cut the mustard.
Deltec, Aquamedic, Tunze and Schuran!

Would have loved a Deltec but as a 'budget' buy the V400 seems like a good purchase, skimming beautifully. 8)

I am too tight to buy brand new so you can normally pick up a second hand Deltec skimmer for the price of a brand new V 400.
Trust me once you get a Deltec there is no going back! 8-)

so would the deltec be the quietest skimmer out of them all
Reefer
08-20-2006, 09:23 PM
My Dad has a Deltec which after a bit of setting up is quiet, my Uncle has an Aqua Medic percula system and that skimmer is also quiet, I have a TMC V400 which isnt as quiet but I havent set it up properly yet as Im moving Friday so no point in messing about with it. If you have the cash (Ididnt) buy a deltec.

Just toook my v2 800 tmc back to fish shop and they set it up on their tank...consensus was that there is definately something wrong with it
So now they are contacting TMC to see what to do next.....
I hope they can sort it before I go on holiday.

I would say if the unit is duff the LFS should replace it with a working unit and then they can sort it out with TMC :-?

Hi I find Deltec and Aqua Medic the best skimmers around. I run a Aqua Medic 5000 Baby on my 7x2x2 tank and the stuff it pulls out is unbelievable. I did have a Deltec AP 850 on my last tank and found it very noisy so bought the A-M one which i am happy with. Eric

Ok with the confidence you guys have given me...I have just rang the shop and they have agreed to swap it for a new one :-D
Sadly they've none in stock :( So I have to wait for another one. Guess I will have to dig out my old prizm in the mean time
So thanks for giving me the courage to tell them whats what 8)
