My Racoon butterfly died today:(
Im really fed up as I thought this tank was ok after my wipeout in the 4ft.
He had lasted just 4 weeks (to the day) but was quite a character and had done me the great service of cleaning all my new rock of the dreaded aiptasia.
There was no outward sign of disease, no spots, furry bits et al, and his gills looked nice and clear. He wasnt too thin, and had been feeding ok up until yesterday, so at present all i can think of is my water. I will check the parameters after tea as the tank is fairly new, but it was properly cycled prior to introducing the fish.
And then there was one My oddball 'clarki'. I hope he survives as I havent seen one like him before and with me moving very shortly I might be tempted to give up if he doesnt as im sick of loosing fish.

Hi Peter sorry your Racoon died m8, but when you move fish they get stressed nd this then leads to illness that kills them most times. It does not show up right away but can show up days after the move. Butterflys are funny fish to keep they seem to be feeding and just die for no reason, the best thing to do is leve your tank etc until you move before you add any more fish then only slowly after you have set it up again. I know how you feel and its very frustrating to lose fish but these things happen when you stress them. HTH Twiggy
Ach, sorry to hear that Peter. This Mysterious Death Syndrome is a bitch to be sure, you see it all the time, fine one day dead or gone the next.
Same thing happened to me a good while back with a Bi-Colour Blenny, was gutted then, so I know how you feel.
As for the why or what causes this I really don't know but can I suggest that you add some Krill or Sera GVG Marin flake to your feeding regime, these are rich in Iodine, which is good for marine fish and it may make all the difference. I started feeding these after I lost the Bi Colour and so far so good.
Cheers,
Campbell

Thanks guys was going to test the water but thinking about it i dont know if it will tell me anything as the wife had litterlly just put the food (frozen Krill) in the tank when she spotted the Racoon in the rock.
that was about 2 hrs ago so dont know what affect the would have on my readings.
Is it worth bothering or should I leave it till morning?

Sorry to hear that - I had exactly the same scenario. Great little racoon which did a fantastic job on over 100 aptaisia. Feeding fine then one day just died. All other tank mates absolutely fine.
Strange and sad.
The joys of reefkeeping.
Great little fish though:)

its sad losing a nice fish, but trying to find the cause is definately frustrating as there appears to be no reason for the death.the same happened to my yellow tang it was swimming about then it just turned on its side and died for no apparent reason, no marks on the body or nothing.derek

Thanks Guys. will leave the water tests till tommorow.
Wilo- thanks mate but just moving 2 doors down. planning on setting the 6ft up from scratch in the new house.
The Racoon was in the 45gal fit filtration tank. Hadnt been anywhere near the wipeout tank which is still under quarantine ( for 8 weeks 2 days now.)
Will keep the corals from the 4ft in a vat until the new tank is ready.
